Continuing Education Activity Guidelines for Approval

 

Who can offer approved CE activities?

q       CE company

q       Academic institution

q       State professional association (e.g. VOTA)

q       Hospital or rehabilitation center that is JCAHO/CARF accredited

q       School district

q       Product manufacturer/distributor

q       Insurance company

q       National professional association (e.g. AOTA)

q       Others approved by the International Association of Continuing Education & Training (IACET)

q       State regulatory boards and other associations (ASHA, ANA, AMA, APA, APTA, etc.)

q       AOTA Approved Providers

 

What is the purpose of the CE Activity Approval Form?

q       It acts as a trigger to ensure that practitioners and/or continuing education providers are meeting criteria set by the Board of Medicine and/or NBCOT

q       One form shall be filled out for each CE activity submitted

 

Who reviews the CE Activity Approval Form?

q       The VOTA CE committee has the authority and responsibility to establish and implement review procedures in order to lend credibility to practitioner chosen CE activities to meet Board of Medicine and/or NBCOT requirements

q       One person shall be designated as CE administrator with a panel of reviewers available.

 

How is time spent in CE activities measured?

q       60 minutes = 1 contact hour

q       1 contact hour = 1 professional development unit (PDU)

q       1 continuing education unit (CEU) = 10 hours

q       1 academic credit hour = 10 professional development units (PDU)

 

Who is responsible for keeping records on the CE activities submitted for approval?

q       Each individual practitioner is responsible to maintain personal records for CE activities he/she attended.  It is recommended that records be kept for a minimum of seven years.

q       VOTA will maintain a file of CE Activity Approval Forms submitted. Please note that such records, as maintained by VOTA, will not serve as proof of attendance in any CE activity chosen by the individual practitioner.

 

How soon do I need to submit the CE Activity Approval Form?

q       The earlier the better, however no forms will be accepted within four weeks of the requested event.

 

When should I expect to get feedback?

q       You should receive a copy of the CE Committee Review within two weeks following receipt of your CE Activity Approval Form.

 

How much does it cost to have an activity approved?

q       Review and approval is free to all VOTA members

q       $65 30+ days in advance for individuals who are non-VOTA members (this fee includes VOTA membership for the remaining membership year through June 30)

q       $200  60+ days in advance for organizations/CE providers

q       $400  30-60 days in advance for organizations/CE providers
